New Site Suggestions

Postby mwd » Sat Jan 02, 2016 5:45 pm

Hi All,

So obviously we need to discuss the categories/forums we will require and anything else related to the day to day running of the site. So please post any suggestions here.

Michael.

Hello Michael,

Can I suggest a "Retro Builds" Category to show off new or existing retro builds ??

I'm putting together a Slot 1 system based around an AX6BC Pro m/board and Pentium 3 with Matrox G550 AGP Card and Dual Voodoo II Cards in SLI with a SB Live! card, complete with both 3.5" and 5.25" Floppy Drives and would like to document the whole process online... seems like this would be a good place to do it ....

Cheers,

Andrew

Hey Andrew,

First sorry about the "Approval" of forum posts, I'm not sure why that is happening yet, I'll look into it.

Yes Retro Builds sounds like a great idea. I'll create it.

Michael.

  • Rules for trading/disputes (check out amibay.com for an example)
  • Feedback system?
  • Consoles
  • Amiga/Commodore/non-intel PC stuff
  • Meetups/swap meets/organising Shane's Australian Trailer Tour :D

Could you make the avatar allowance a bit more generous? :D Right now it's 90x90 and 6kb. The dimensions are fine with me but the 6kb limit is pretty draconian (I realise it's the default for a phpBB install, ofc). Maybe 60kb instead?

Hi All,

Some good suggestions.

  • Console Section Added
  • I agree with Rules for Selling/Trading, will look into it
  • I will see if there is a feedback system plugin for phpBB and if we can limit to the Trading section
  • I've increased the avatar limits
  • https is now working and will become the default in the next day or so

Amiga/Commodore/non-intel PC stuff, should we just keep that with the Retro Computing section. Do we need a different forum for that?

Hi guys!

Over here from OCAU as well (different username).

I know there's a retro build forum, but how about a dedicated individual collection/pics forum? Couple of other forums have a members' collection forum, which are fairly active, and it's handy to have a thread per member rather than mixing things up in a joint thread.

Also agree with a tutorial section.

I think one computer per thread makes it easier, but would be happy todo something different if people agree.

I will create a tutorial section now though. Good idea.

" thread per member " can be tricky if you live urban. There is a real value to collections.
Conversations I've had, revealed that member was concerned to reveal too much.
Rightly so on that horde of parts.

Message me " now curious "

Trading. Needs a good trader list. But also a emphasis on not defaming someone on a deal go wrong in open forum.
Reward the good with praise. Sort the negative in message.

Hey,

Also here from OCAU with a different username, the one I normally use :) I think it should remain simple at this stage, if there is sufficient post to require separate sections then add them in when needed. Also think tutorial section is an awesome idea.

Cheers,
Shane.

Exciting start. :)

I'd suggest re-ordering the forums into categories, maybe something like:

General
General Chat
Meet Ups
Tutorials, Reviews and Howtos

Retro
Retro Computing Discussion
Retro Computing Builds
Console Discussion

For Sale
For Sale or Trade - Retro Computing Related
For Sale - Other
Wanted to Buy

Nine is definitely enough. It'd be good to make the For Sale forums not indexed by Google.

Hey,

Yes I agree 9 is more than enough forums for now.

I've made changes to the forum categories as suggested, thanks, looks better/easier.

Why do you want to disable indexing on the for sale forums? Pretty easy to do but just interested.

Looks good.

More paranoia than anything else... Since some personal information will invariably be included.

Can you move the poster information from the right to the left?
