K7 and P3 Win98se gaming builds

Postby roboat » Sun Jan 10, 2016 9:27 pm

Thought it'd be a nice way to say hello by throwing up a bit of a build log for my 2 98 gaming systems I plan on making. I will try and keep things updated as I aquire hardware and software and to lay out my ideas.
The first of the 2 is a Amd K7 slot A system I dug up out of my parents garage and the second is a matx intel pentium 3 s370 system i'm building from scratch (I have only purchased the motherboard so far). I would love to find a slot 1 matx motherboard but they seem to be fairly rare but i'll keep looking.

Edit as the system specs have changed.

Currently the AMD system sits
Cpu: K7 750 Slot A
Motherboard: Asus K7M (Hp oem board)
Ram: 2x256mb pc 133 (runs at 100mhz)
Video Card: Asus v7700ti 64mb (Geforce2 ti)

Please excuse the orientation of the photos, photobucket won't let me rotate them at the moment.

Intel system will be
Cpu: Pentium 3 800mhz coppermine
Motherboard: Acer Veriton 5100 S58M-3 (intel 815e chipset)
Ram: 2x256mb pc133
Video Card: Voodoo5 5500

After a lot of searching on ebay it is looking like one system will have a asus v7700ti 64mb geforce2 ti (found one for $35) which in turn was the 2nd fastest video card of the year 2000, only to be beaten by a geforce2 ultra which only had a 60mhz faster memory clock. Now if only I could buy a voodoo 5 5500 for anywhere near the same price lol I can only dream.

Good luck getting pretty much any Voodoo for $35 these days. there are some cheap Voodoo 2s going from Russia but with postage puts them around the $60 mark.

All you see cheap these days are those crappy 8Meg OEM Voodoo 3's.

Nice builds I Like slot A systems never had one though. I went straight from SS7 to Socket A back in the day.

Nice gear and builds! Slot A was a short phase, but it's remembered fondly, and was a solid performer.

While I hope you do find your slot 1 mATX, your socket 370/815e board should give you a wider range of speeds to test at (450-866), and DOS compatibility for its audio (http://pdfstream.manualsonline.com/d/d8 ... 2d17fb.pdf).

Thanks for that, not sure if I will try and hunt down a non oem branded motherboard or not at a later date, on another note I purchased this today.

Removed the motherboard from the case and put new thermal paste on the chipset heatsink and gave the board and case a good clean.

Crappy P4 case the system came in, will do for now until I can be bothered finding something better

Seems to have a little bit of a corrosion/oxidization on the usb port surround that goes into the io plate, could I use a little bit of wd40 or something to prevent this from getting any worse?

The plating is eaten on the ports. Best try a tiny amount of rust converter, dampen tissue / cloth with it.
That will leave a Phosphoric coating. Caution with eyes. Washes hands well
later.

My acer P3 motherboard arrived today which was a pleasant surprise, (no pics as the ebay pics are in the OP). I also scored some gear from a mates place for 2 redbulls which i'm happy about, should have windows 98 loaded on the K7 system tonight :).

1 ide dvd drive, 4 ide hdd (2x40gb 2x80gb), 2 floppy drives (1 missing face plate), few ribbon cables and 2 sata dvd drives. There was a Asus p4s800-mx se motherboard and a celeron as well which will get put away in the cupboard.

Ended up getting win98se installed but was possibly the most painful thing ive had to do for a while. I didn't have any blank cd's so had to copy the windows instal files to a 2nd hdd and boot off that, then I remembered windows 98 has no native usb drive support so a lot of power off and swapping hard drives to get all the files I needed. :(

Oh wow that does sound painful! I was lucky enough to pick up a few unopened 98se CDs that a company was binning a few years back.

FYI you can upload photos directly on the forums if you wish, supports higher resolution and is easy etc.

Ah k I will do that from now on thanks mwd, now i'm dealing with a could not locate directx.inf error :(, trying to instal the win98 sp3.45 and hot fix packs from majorgeeks is a pain in the ass. I can only get them to work if I extract all hotfixes from the installer via winzip.

A little update, I am fairly well ready to throw the Asus K7M in the bin, the usb internal header doesn't work which is annoying, it seems that none of the 3 pin fan headers work either (the traces for the 12v power for the fans go no where). It doesn't have front panel pins for a hdd led or a reset switch (honestly wtf hp).

I have retro fitted the Amd K7 system into a modern case, was mainly used for the greater cooling options but not very happy with the look of the case (need black ide cables too).

Image

I have aswell purchased a Voodoo5 5500, not overly sure if it is suited more to the P3 or if it's more suited to a Amd Socket A build, Need to do more research not very familiar with the time period the Voodoo5 was released.

Image

Edit: After looking at reviews of the voodoo5 5500, most of them are paired with a k7 700 and a p3 around the same speed so i'm happy now, knowing i'll be pairing the voodoo5 with a p3 866mhz and the geforce2 ti with the k7 750.

Nice score on the V5! Just saw on OCAU that you paid $175, a top price indeed :D

With the K7 motherboard, looks like it has a few oddities e.g. http://www.elhvb.com/ctechinfo/model/k7m/k7m.php suggests to use the power LED header for the switch! Wondering why there's no reset switch ... maybe the HP system didn't have one? just speculation.

Also, pretty cool that this page is indexed in Google ;)

It's a stupid oem board it has the speaker header then has no other proper headers in that area but has some random pins above that aren't labeled that are the on off switch and the power led so I have no idea. I have a pci usb 2.0 card in there so that helps but I would like to have front panel usb and audio didn't think that was too much to ask haha. I might offload the board and buy a asus k7m-rm which is a retail matx version of the board, that should suit me better I like compact systems.

So I received my Geforce2 ti yesterday which was poorly packaged and the box was partially crushed :-(. Threw it in my amd system and it doesn't boot, not really happy.

On a better note my voodoo 5 is in the post, I bought a p3 coppermine 800 mhz for $8, and a matrox g450 for $13 delivered and a sound blaster audigy 2 for $10, jjust need a few extra sticks of ram and a cpu heatsink to get that running :-).

Would this be my problem??

So transister case is marked but not burnt ? I'd say no.

Caps or a solder reflow

So things have taken a bit of a change in direction. I need to find someone to repair my voodoo 5 as well.

The geforce2 was doa, I'm selling the tnt2 pro, I currently have a g450 dual head and a voodoo5 5500, bidding on a few voodoo banshees, will be buying a geforce2 and voodoo 2's when I find them at a reasonable price.

I have a p3 800 s370, k7 750 slot a, socket a 1ghz athlon and xp 2400+, bidding on a tualatin and I've been looking at slot 1 gear as well (possibly p2 and p3 gear)

I recently bought a Sound Blaster Live 5.1, Audigy 2 ZS and am looking at Sound Blaster AWE64 Golds

Generally have no idea what I'm trying to do just buying gear at the moment and will try and post some pics up of gear I buy and computers I might build.

Here's a mock up of the Acer s370 matx board, 800mhz p3 and voodoo5 5500 I a fractal design core 1100 case.

I was sorry to hear about the V5, hopefully you can get it fixed and running again! There are too few of them left in the world, but it's good you received a partial refund on it.

Maybe all the parts junkies (I'm included) should all commit to actually posting one build a week ;) otherwise you'll end up with bucketloads of bits and wonder where to start! which is my current predicament.
