Socket 3 / 486 DX2 / Mach64 / SB 16 / Osborne Computer

Postby mwd » Sun Jan 03, 2016 6:00 pm

Hi All,

I thought I'd post some more details and photos about my Osbourne 486.

It was purchased new by one of my clients and given to me a few years back, so it is in good condition and works well (other than the HDD).

I haven't done much to it at all. The standard specs were

  • Intel 486 DX2/66
  • 8MB Ram
  • ATI Mach64 1MB VLB onboard (upgradable to 2mb)
  • 400MB HDD
  • Sound Blaster 16 CT1740
  • 2x CD ROM (connected via SB16)
  • Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22

So far I have added a 3COM ISA network card and upgraded the ram to 64MB. I've also install Windows NT 4.0 Server simply see how well it worked (surprisingly well, just needs lots of ram).

Sometimes the HDD doesn't spin up when you first turn it on, so I've found an IDE to SD converted that screws into the back plane (and allows you to access the SD card without opening the computer). This has been ordered and I will hopefully install soon.

Once the SD card is in I have an Osbourne branded install CD which I am going to use to reinstall Win 3.11 and DOS.

I've tested Duke3D on it (at 320x200) and it works very well.

Nice Osborne, I remember the days when these were on my "wish list". And I wish we could see more "Made in Australia" notation on tech items! Even if all they did was make the case :)
